Where do we go from here?
Chapters One through Nine analyze the causes of the decline of values. We often have a tendency to look for one underlying cause of this decline but if we think about it, hardly anything in life is the result of just one factor. The decline of values in our society is no exception. There has not been one cause of this phenomenon. Rather, it has been a series of events resulting from an interpretation and/or misinterpretation of ideas by thinkers during the last hundred years. Granted, it would be much easier to boil everything down to one specific cause but that can’t be done in this situation.
Chapters Ten, Eleven and Twelve deal specifically with morality and moral values. Man is uniquely a moral creature and, therefore, has what it takes to be a source of moral authority if he so chooses.
Chapter Thirteen is an analysis of virtue and virtuous behavior. Some virtues are rooted in morality and some are not. Virtues, of course, play an integral role in any comprehensive discussion of values.
Chapter Fourteen deals with quality of life issues. All people pretty much want to be happy but wanting it is certainly no guarantee that we will attain such status. Happiness, like anything else of value, may be difficult to attain but assuredly there is no genuine quality of life without happiness. Values are essential to happiness.
